The Core Beliefs
One Supreme Creator
Vodou teaches that there is a distant supreme creator called Bondye, meaning “Good God.” Bondye created the universe but does not interact with humans directly.
The Loa (Spirits)
Instead, people connect with spiritual forces called the Loa (also spelled lwa). These spirits act as intermediaries between humans and Bondye. Each Loa has its own personality, preferences, symbols, and areas of influence such as love, protection, justice, healing, or prosperity.
Ancestors
Ancestors play a very important role. Honoring them is believed to bring guidance, protection, and wisdom to the living.
Rituals and Practices
Vodou ceremonies often include:
Drumming and singing
- Sacred symbols called veve drawn on the ground
- Offerings like food, rum, candles, and flowers &
- Prayer and invocation of spirits & Spirit possession, where a Loa temporarily mounts a devotee to communicate or give blessings
